On occasions frontline staff maybe faced with defusing strong emotional reactions in students and other staff, defusing anger and responding to distress. Handling these situations effectively and professionally requires training and refreshing of both interpersonal communication skills and recognition of potential problematic situations.
Two customised courses have been created. One is targeted at frontline staff and the other has been designed specifically for supervisors and academic staff. Both courses offer examples based on potential situations each group may experience in their particular work roles. The course for supervisors and academic also focuses on understanding the support and assistance their staff may need in refreshing and bouncing back from challenging behaviours.
The program is conducted in a full day session and focuses on the following practical skills:
- Recognise signs of escalation of emotional and challenging behaviours (e.g. anger, depression, at risk students). This also includes recognising situations requiring withdrawal and potentially risky situations.
- Respond in a professional, safe and controlled manner with defusing skills, including strategies for withdrawing safely from conversations.
- Refer students or staff for further help; knowing when, how, who and why.
- Refresh during and after work with switching-off and other self management skills.
