School of Life Sciences

We seek enthusiastic and qualified pharmacy academics with expertise in the areas of Pharmacy Practice and/or Pharmacotherapeutics to join our expanding team of pharmacy educators. These positions offer the opportunity to be involved in the further development of a new and innovative pharmacy degree with a focus on communication and practice in a community pharmacy environment.

Closes: 2 June 2008

Salary: $65 815 to $78 163 pa (Lecturer); $80 629 to $92 980 (Senior Lecturer)

Appointment will be made at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Position Purpose

The Faculty of Science has established a new and exciting course in Pharmacy and enrolled the first intake of students during 2005. The appointees will provide high level content knowledge in the relevant areas of pharmacy education and will be responsible for the development and delivery of lectures, tutorials and practical classes and the coordination of pharmacy units in the second, third and fourth years of the course. The positions will be located on the Gardens Point campus of the University.

Organisational Relationships

The appointees will report to the Head of School of Life Sciences for PPR-AS (Performance Planning and Review for Academic Staff), academic leadership and guidance. It is an expectation that the appointees will interact positively with other members of the School and Faculty as well as liaise with staff from faculties across the University where appropriate.

DUTY STATEMENT - LECTURER

General standard

A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

Specific duties

Specific duties of a lecturer may include:

Academic leadership

  • Initiation and development of unit material.
  • Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
  • Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
  • A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
  • Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research in a relevant area to Pharmacy or to the existing research programs in the Faculty of Science.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.

Professional leadership

  • Involvement in professional activity.

Other

  • Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.

SELECTION CRITERIA - LECTURER

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.

Academic and Professional Leadership

  • Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.

Teaching and Learning

  • Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Research and Scholarship

  • Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.

Other skills and attributes

  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.

An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.

DUTY STATEMENT – SENIOR LECTURER

General standard

A senior lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a school/faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

Specific duties

Specific duties of a senior lecturer may include:

Academic leadership

  • Initiation and development of course material.
  • Course coordination.
  • Broad administrative functions.
  • Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
  • Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research in a relevant area to Pharmacy or to the existing research programs in the Faculty of Science.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • Exercising a significant role in teaching and teaching development within the University.
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.

Professional leadership

  • Substantial involvement in professional activity.

Other

  • Accountable for effective supervision including on-the-job safety training, the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and the conduct of safe work practices.

SELECTION CRITERIA – SENIOR LECTURER

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a senior lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

  • Demonstrated experience in providing leadership in an administrative role in a University or professional setting and record of successful interaction within these settings.

  • Record of experience in teaching effectively including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and to supervise postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

  • Record of independent contribution to research/scholarship evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.

Other skills and attributes

  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.

Information for applicants

Interview requirement: As part of the interview process, shortlisted applicants will be required to present a 30 minute (20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes questions) seminar on a topic to be advised. The seminar will open to the staff and postgraduate students of the School of Life Sciences.
