We are seeking an Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies to lead the strategic development and delivery of the MBA and other postgraduate coursework programs

Fixed-term for five years

Reference Number: 28197

The appointee will lead the strategic development and delivery of the MBA and other postgraduate coursework programs. A key responsibility of this role is to enhance the reputation and brand of the graduate coursework programs both nationally and internationally. Applicants must possess proven leadership abilities and demonstrated skills in developing a culture of excellence in a postgraduate setting.

Appointment will be fixed-term for five years with an option for renewal. QUT would ideally make appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level for this position. BACKGROUND

The Faculty of Business is QUT's largest faculty, attracting over a quarter of the university's enrolments, and is also one of the largest business faculties in Australia. Through various collaborations with industry and professional bodies, the Faculty is a key player in the business community with extensive local and international links.

The Faculty of Business has achieved international recognition with the world’s leading accrediting bodies – AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS - for the quality of its degree programs and has a philosophy of continuous quality improvement. In keeping with this the Faculty is committed to the provision of high standards of service in the delivery of its teaching, research and executive education activities.

DUTY STATEMENT

Purpose of Position

The Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies is responsible to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Business for the quality and development of the Faculty’s postgraduate course work programs and building the reputation of the programs in the marketplace. Existing courses include the MBA, Master of Business and Graduate Certificate level courses. These programs must meet the needs of a rapidly changing market place both nationally and internationally which includes an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate.

The position will work with the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Board to set the strategic direction of the MBA and other postgraduate coursework programs and build their reputation and brand both nationally and internationally, as well as enhance the quality of teaching services into the programs. The role also involves developing a culture of excellence and cooperation among the staff teaching into the postgraduate programs from the discipline based Schools, the Heads of School, and the administration staff supporting these activities. Also, in conjunction with the Faculty’s Student Services Office, the position is responsible for overseeing the provision of course progression advice and counselling on academic matters to postgraduate coursework students. Knowledge of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, and a demonstrated ability to provide leadership in course development and ongoing quality enhancement, is essential.

The Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies is also responsible for the Faculty’s participation in various ranking surveys of the MBA and Masters programs, both nationally and internationally, and ensuring that the best possible favourable outcomes are achieved.

Organisational Relationships

The position reports to the Executive Dean of the Faculty and the position is a member of the Dean’s Executive Group.

Duty Statement for Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies:

The Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies in consultation with the Heads of School within the Faculty of Business, is responsible for:

  • Developing a culture of excellence and team attitude among staff from all subject areas of the Faculty’s postgraduate coursework programs and the Heads of School;
  • Actively contribute to the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Board by providing leadership in course development, and in the enhancement of teaching quality, study guides and Blackboard sites, giving particular emphasis to enhancing academic quality;
  • Building the reputation and branding in the marketplace by contributing to the marketing campaigns and materials of the Faculty’s postgraduate coursework offerings, and consulting with relevant stakeholders within the Faculty, including Heads of School and the Executive Dean, regarding proposed marketing activities;
  • Is an ex-officio member of the Dean’s Executive Group, the Faculty Education Committee, and the Faculty Academic Board;
  • Continually develops and monitors efforts to improve the postgraduate coursework offerings of the Faculty and the marketing of them;
  • Liaising and negotiating with Heads of Schools on subject areas/units offered in the postgraduate programs to provide an appropriate range of studies, having regard to the Faculty’s strategic priorities and in accordance with the objectives and structure of the courses;
  • Managing the teaching allocations for the Faculty’s postgraduate coursework programs in conjunction with the Heads of School, and negotiating with Heads of School to ensure the quality of teaching in these programs;
  • Annual course reporting for all postgraduate coursework programs offered in the Faculty;
  • Responsible for the Faculty’s participation and outcomes in various ranking surveys both nationally and internationally, and for ensuring that administration processes are implemented within the BGSB for the appropriate collection of data;
  • Ensuring high level service to students, including overseeing responses to enquiries and the provision of quality course materials and access to resources;
  • Determining appropriate course plans for students transferring into the postgraduate programs from another course or institution once exemption/credits have been determined;
  • In conjunction with the Graduate Studies Administration Manager, ensuring that students’ enrolments conform with the course structures and prerequisites of the programs and that students have met all course requirements before they are certified as eligible for graduation;
  • Ensuring students are appropriately counselled on academic matters and that their progress is fostered in all programs;
  • In conjunction with the Graduate Studies Administration Manager, maintaining a record of approved evolutionary course changes for reference in the course accreditation process;
  • In conjunction with the Graduate Studies Administration Manager, providing appropriate information on the courses and promoting the quality and range of students enrolled in the courses;
  • Dealing with other relevant academic matters connected with the postgraduate coursework programs.
  • Ensuring business risks are identified and managed through effective risk management strategies.

Duty Statement for Professor

A professor is expected to exercise a special responsibility in providing leadership and in fostering excellence in research, teaching, professional activities and policy development in the academic discipline within the school or other comparable organisational unit, within the University and within the community, both scholarly and general.

Specific duties of a professor may include:

Academic leadership

  • Development of research policy.
  • Playing an active role in the maintenance of academic standards and in the development of educational policy and of curriculum areas within the discipline.
  • Developing and being involved in administrative matters within the school or other comparable organisational unit and within the institution.
  • Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • Fostering excellence in teaching within the University and university system.
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Making a distinguished personal contribution to teaching at all levels.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.

Professional leadership

  • Participating in and providing leadership in community affairs, particularly those related to the discipline, in professional, commercial and industrial sectors where appropriate.

Other

  • Accountable for the development, provision, promotion and evaluation of systems of work, managing the work environment, and providing appropriate instruction, supervision and enforcement leading to a safe and healthy workplace.

Duty Statement for Associate Professor

An associate professor is expected to make a significant contribution to all activities of the organisational unit or interdisciplinary area and play a significant role within his/her profession or discipline. Academics at this level may be appointed in recognition of their distinction in their disciplinary area.

Specific duties of an associate professor may include:

Academic leadership

  • The development of and responsibility for curriculum/programs of study.

Course coordination.

  • High level administrative functions.
  • Attendance at school and faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
  • Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.

Professional leadership

  • Significant contribution to the profession and/or discipline.

Other

  • Accountable for the development, provision, promotion and evaluation of systems of work, managing the work environment, and providing appropriate instruction, supervision and enforcement leading to a safe and healthy workplace.

SELECTION CRITERIA (ASSISTANT DEAN, GRADUATE STUDIES)

  1. Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
  2. Ability to pursue the mission and goals of the Faculty and the University within the framework of the Faculty’s values and vision.
  3. Highly developed leadership ability as demonstrated by success in achieving objectives and in contributing to improved organisational performance. This ability to lead will be exemplified by a capacity to manage complex relationships in an academic setting.
  4. Demonstrated experience in leadership and management of large-scale postgraduate programs.
  5. Ability to promote and foster integrated multi-disciplinary endeavours and to build partnerships internally and externally as part of an integrated scholarly environment.
  6. In-depth understanding of contemporary institutional, national and international contexts for postgraduate management education.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to build teams and effectively interact with a range of staff in a complex environment.
  8. Demonstrated ability to implement quality assurance mechanisms to generate a culture of continuous improvement.
  9. Sound knowledge of equal employment opportunity and equity principles and of the principles of workplace health and safety with a demonstrated commitment to implementation at both the strategic and operational levels.

SELECTION CRITERIA (PROFESSOR)

To meet the criteria for appointment with the title of Professor

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

To be appointed as a professor a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the University Council:

Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline area or equivalent accreditation or standing.

Academic and Professional Leadership

  • Record of outstanding achievement in providing leadership in a managerial role in a University or professional setting and of outstanding contribution within these settings.

Teaching and Learning

  • Outstanding record of excellence and leadership in teaching and learning including scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and supervision of postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

  • Outstanding record of research/scholarship and of leadership in research/scholarship.

Other skills and attributes

  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to integrate and implement these principles at both a strategic and operational level.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.

SELECTION CRITERIA (ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR)

To meet the criteria for appointment with the title of Associate Professor

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

To be appointed as an associate professor a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the University Council:

Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline area or equivalent accreditation or standing.

Academic and Professional Leadership

  • Record of achievement in providing leadership in a major administrative or managerial role in a University or professional setting and of significant contribution within these settings.

Teaching and Learning

  • Record of excellence and leadership in teaching and learning including scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and supervision of postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

  • Record of substantial contribution to research/scholarship.

Other skills and attributes

  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to integrate and implement these principles at both a strategic and operational level.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline
