Fixed-term for three years

We are looking to expand our team in Film and Television by appointing a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer with relevant expertise who will contribute significantly to teaching and research, especially in the area of television and film producing. The successful applicant will undertake undergraduate teaching, coordination and postgraduate supervision.

Salary: Lecturer $65 815 to $78 163 pa
Senior Lecturer $80 629 to 92 980 pa

Appointment will be made at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer Level in accordance with the need of the Faculty and the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.

Position Purpose

QUT’s Film and Television program has a particular interest in the role of the producer in the television and film industries. Central to this role is a highly developed understanding of audience; story; finance and budget; as well as copyright and related legal issues. The Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (Producing) will have demonstrated expertise in the producing and business aspects of television and film. She or he will play a leading role in the learning and teaching effort in television and film producing, and will contribute to curriculum development and teaching in the discipline as a whole. The Lecturer / Senior Lecturer will also contribute to research outputs in the area, and be qualified to supervise both traditional and creative practice-led research projects.

Organisational Relationships

The Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (Producing) reports to the Portfolio Director. The position will liaise extensively with discipline staff and other academics within the Creative Industries Faculty. The position will also liaise with academic staff within Faculties across the University with respect to interfaculty courses.

DUTY STATEMENT - LECTURER

General standard

A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

Specific duties

Specific duties of a lecturer may include:

Academic leadership

  • Initiation and development of unit material.
  • Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
  • Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
  • A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
  • Attendance at discipline and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees
  • Development and maintenance of links between industry, the university and postgraduate students.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
  • Professional leadership
  • Involvement in professional activity within the graphic design and advertising industries.

Other

  • Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.

SELECTION CRITERIA – LECTURER

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

Subject to the preceding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or a degree with significant professional standing and experience. In considering the suitability of applicants, the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.

Academic and Professional Leadership

  • Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.

Teaching and Learning

  • Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Research and Scholarship

  • Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship, which may be evidenced by publications, creative practice and/or success in attracting research support.

Other skills and attributes

  • Demonstrated capacity to build effective industry networks.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.

Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant discipline and industry experience in television and film producing (e.g. Executive Producer or Producer).

An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.

DUTY STATEMENT – SENIOR LECTURER

General standard

A senior lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a discipline/faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.

Specific duties

Specific duties of a senior lecturer may include:

Academic leadership

  • Initiation and development of course material.
  • Course coordination.
  • Broad administrative functions.
  • Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
  • Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.

Research and scholarship

  • The conduct of research.

Teaching performance and leadership

  • Exercising a significant role in teaching and teaching development within the University.
  • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
  • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
  • Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
  • Marking and assessment.
  • Consultation with students.
  • Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
  • Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
  • Professional leadership
  • Substantial involvement in professional activity.

Other

  • Accountable for effective supervision including on-the-job safety training, the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and the conduct of safe work practices.

SELECTION CRITERIA – SENIOR LECTURER

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

  • Record of experience in teaching effectively including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and to supervise postgraduate students.

Research and Scholarship

  • Record of independent contribution to research/scholarship evidenced by publications, creative practice and/or success in attracting research support.

Other skills and attributes

  • Evidence of relevant discipline and industry experience in film and television producing (e.g. Executive Producer or Producer)
  • Demonstrated capacity to build effective industry networks.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.

This position is fixed term and applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents or hold a temporary visa at the time of the closing date for the duration of the fixed term appointment allowing the applicant to work the required hours set out for the period of the fixed term appointment.
