BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The School, one of five in the Faculty of Health, is located at the Kelvin Grove campus with over 1500 students enrolled, and comprising more than 50 academic, research and professional staff. Further information on the School is available at http://www.hlth.qut.edu.au
The School of Public Health is a multi-disciplinary academic unit, dedicated to excellence in research, teaching, and service. Research within the school, across its various disciplinary specialisations and related teams, is affiliated with QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), located in the adjacent Kelvin Grove Urban Village near central Brisbane. The postgraduate research environment is stimulating and diverse, and there is a solid health science training infrastructure.
The School’s undergraduate teaching activities include three year programs in allied health specialisations in Public Health/Health Promotion, Nutrition and Paramedic Education. There are two four year clinical programs - Nutrition and Dietetics, and Podiatry. Postgraduate programs include Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters in Public Health, Health Science and Health Management in discipline areas such as Health Policy, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Promotion, Public Health Nutrition, Health Information Management, Environmental Health and Occupational Health and Safety.
Position Purpose
The appointee will be required for teaching and research, in the School of Public Health, with an energetic team focused on improvement of the nutritional status of populations, at a variety of levels. The School offers both a three-year undergraduate program in Nutrition and a four-year program in Nutrition and Dietetics, and double degrees in Nutrition/Dietetics and Human Movement Studies and a Public Health Nutrition stream within the Master of Public Health. Applicants with experience and/or special interest in nutritional science and food science, clinical nutrition and dietary methodology and assessment are encouraged to apply. The appointee will be expected to be involved in research and supervise Honours and postgraduate research students; also to work closely with nutrition researchers in the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) as well as practitioners and other stakeholders.
Organisational Relationships
Membership of Institute
The position is located in the School of Public Health within the Faculty of Health, and reports to the Chief Investigator of the Project on a day-to-day basis for performance planning and review and workload management. The project is part of QUT’s largest interdisciplinary research institute, the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), thus the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will hold membership of the Institute for the duration of the project being part of the Institute. The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will also liaise and work collaboratively with researchers across the Institute and with key stakeholders on a daily basis.
The position reports to the Head of School for performance planning and review and workload management purposes. The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will liaise closely with fellow academic, professional and research staff within the School, and across the University and will interact with stakeholders and participants of research projects.

DUTY STATEMENT - LECTURER
General standard
A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
- A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
SELECTION CRITERIA - LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in Nutrition or Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Eligibility to be an Accredited Practising Dietitian or Associate Member of the Dietitians Association of Australia.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
