BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Position Purpose
The appointee will teach and coordinate at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and maintain a continuing involvement in at least one significant community service activity. The appointee will also actively seek funding for, and make a significant contribution to, the commercial and research activities in the School and Faculty (including cross-disciplinary research as appropriate).
Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Head, School of Law.
Faculty Structure
The QUT Faculty of Law was established in 1977 and comprises one of the largest Law Schools in the country, the School of Justice and the Legal Practice Unit. The Executive Dean of the Law Faculty is Professor The Honourable Michael Lavarch a former Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Law School is located on the QUT Gardens Point (City) Campus and there are currently 52 full-time academic staff and 12 professional staff employed within the School as well as significant numbers of sessional staff. Learning and Teaching
Law School staff teach into a range of courses including the Bachelor of Laws and nine associated double degrees, graduate certificates, graduate diploma, Masters, SJD and PhD. Further information on the postgraduate programs of the Faculty is available from http://www.law.qut.edu.au/study/
The Faculty of Law is a leader in legal education innovation, particularly in terms of its integration of technology in teaching and its skills development program especially the embedding of graduate capabilities in the core LLB curriculum. With students studying in a multi-modal environment, both internal and external, the Faculty has developed online integrated learning environments that incorporate advanced teaching and learning tools such as streaming media, skills training materials, reflective journals, on-line assessment tasks, discussion forums and chat-rooms. An integral part of the teaching delivery methods is the use of the Learning Management System which is currently Blackboard.
Research
The Faculty has an established research centre with a limited number of designated areas of research strengths which allow for collaboration across the faculties and University Institutes. The faculty is now placing greater emphasis on research potential and aligning members of staff with the Faculty’s identified research programs and areas of interest. Commercial Activities
The Faculty prides itself on its ability to, and reputation for, providing high quality consulting and educational expertise to the professions and broader industry. As well, the Faculty holds a firm commitment to ensuring its research and knowledge is shared with the broader community. We have undertaken a significant number of educational and research consultancies for industry and government. Many of our Faculty members have real world engagement advising with law firms or holding positions with Committees of the Law Society and Law Council of Australia. As well, the Faculty has two Professorships in Law sponsored by major law firms: the Clayton Utz Chair in Public Law and the Gadens Chair in Property Law.
DUTY STATEMENT
General standard
A senior lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a school/faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a senior lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of course material.
- Course coordination.
- Broad administrative functions.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
- Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research and dissemination of research outcomes.
Teaching performance and leadership
- Exercising a significant role in teaching and teaching development within the University.
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of research projects and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Substantial involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for effective supervision including on-the-job safety training, the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and the conduct of safe work practices.

- Coordination of and teaching into undergraduate and postgraduate units.
- Contribution to course improvement initiatives and ongoing curriculum development and teaching innovation projects.
- Ongoing development and maintenance of online learning and teaching materials.
- Participation in student-related activities and promotional events.
- Attendance at and participation in School research workshops and seminars.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceding paragraph, to be appointed as a senior lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Demonstrated experience in providing leadership in an administrative role in a University or professional setting and record of successful interaction within these settings.
- Public or professional standing or recognition as an expert in the relevant area of law.
- An active role in the field through professional associations, professional education and commercial and/or government consultancy.
Teaching and Learning
- Record of experience in teaching effectively including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning and to supervise postgraduate students.
Research and Scholarship
- Record of independent contribution to research/scholarship evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with other staff, for example, to develop and deliver teaching materials, including on-line materials, and to produce research outcomes.
- A demonstrated interest in the scholarship of teaching.
- Excellent oral communication skills for the delivery of an appropriate teaching and learning environment for students.
- Interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to develop networks and partnerships across disciplines and with members of external organisations.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
