BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Medical Radiations is one of three main discipline areas in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences. Undergraduate offerings include a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations Technology) course with majors in Medical Imaging Technology and Radiotherapy Technology. The School also offers coursework Masters/Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate courses in Medical Ultrasound/Cardiac Ultrasound and Breast Ultrasound respectively.
DUTY STATEMENT
Position Purpose
The Associate Lecturer will be part of a team working within the discipline of Medical Radiations to provide quality learning experiences for students in developing pre-clinical and clinical skills.
Organisational Relationships
The Associate Lecturer in Medical Imaging reports to the Discipline Leader, Medical Radiations within the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences. The position will liaise with discipline and other academics in the School, and will also liaise with clinical departments external to the University with respect to student placements.
General standard
An Associate Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of an associate lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Limited administrative functions primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Development of subject area material with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator.
- Acting as unit coordinator provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.
- The most complex levels of unit coordination should not be carried out by an associate lecturer.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Consultation with students.
- Marking and assessment primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
- An Associate Lecturer will not be required to teach primarily in units which are offered only at masters degree level or above.
Professional leadership
- Limited involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- An Associate Lecturer shall work with support and direction from academic staff classified at lecturer and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the academic gains in skill and experience.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
To be appointed as an associate lecturer a candidate normally must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of four years tertiary study in the relevant discipline, for example an honours degree, an extended professional degree or a three year degree with an associated postgraduate diploma. In considering the suitability of applicants the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and/or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Demonstrated experience in, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Potential to participate in or conduct research/scholarship.
Other skills and attributes
- A minimum of 4 years full-time equivalent experience in general radiography.
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively as a team member.
- Registered and licensed as a medical imaging technologist (radiographer).
- Experience which demonstrates an ability to:
- Conduct clinical assessments
- Conduct and administer laboratory classes
- Contribute to continuing education courses in medical imaging
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (five years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
