BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The School of Human Movement Studies is located at the Kelvin Grove campus and is one of five in QUT’s Faculty of Health. The School has significant funded research programs in clinical, applied and basic science aspects of movement, conducted principally through the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at the adjacent Kelvin Grove Urban Village site, and teaches a single and range of double degrees, including courses amongst the first to be accredited by the Australian Association of Exercise and Sports Science. The School has developed a broad range of practicum opportunities and graduates have a strong employment record in clinical, sporting, occupational health and safety and other professions. Position Purpose
The School is seeking to strengthen its role as one of Australia’s leading academic units in Human Movement Studies by the addition of an academic or academic/practitioner at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level. The appointee should have a record of quality research and teaching that complements the strengths of existing staff. Contributions to the teaching and supervision of research in functional anatomy, resistance training or musculoskeletal injury and adaptation would be a particular advantage.
We especially encourage applications from individuals capable of making a contribution in clinical or professional practice related to human movement, with opportunities to conduct clinical work and relevant teaching in the new QUT Health Clinics at 44 Musk Avenue, adjacent to the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation. The successful appointee is likely to be a currently accredited Exercise Physiologist or eligible for such accreditation, and/or to have relevant qualifications in an allied health field.
It is expected that the appointee will contribute significantly to at least two of the three main areas of research, teaching and service.
Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Head of School for performance planning and review and workload management purposes. The appointee will liaise closely with fellow academic, professional and research staff within the School,and across the University and will interact with stakeholders and participants of research projects.
DUTY STATEMENT - LECTURER
General standard
A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
- A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
SELECTION CRITERIA - LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
DUTY STATEMENT – SENIOR LECTURER
General standard
A senior lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a school/faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a senior lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of course material.
- Course coordination.
- Broad administrative functions.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
- Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research culminating in publications in tier A* and A rated journals in the pending ERA assessment, and the supervision of Higher Degree research students and attraction of competitive external grant funding.
Teaching performance and leadership
- Exercising a significant role in teaching and teaching development within the University.
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work and research degrees.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Substantial involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for effective supervision including on-the-job safety training, the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and the conduct of safe work practices.
SELECTION CRITERIA – SENIOR LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceding paragraph, to be appointed as a senior lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

- Record of independent contribution to research/scholarship evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals, higher degree research student completions and demonstrated success in attracting research funding support.
Other skills and attributes
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
