INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
Appointment will be made at either Associate Lecturer or Lecturer level depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.
This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The program which is conducted over one year aims to provide participants with a comprehensive suite of skills, knowledge and abilities to ensure success in an academic career. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
QUT defines an Early Career Academic as a person who has been in an academic role for less than three years.
The School of Nursing is one of five schools which make up the Faculty of Health. The School of Nursing is the largest school in the faculty and produces highly regarded professional nurses through the full range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses from Bachelor to PhD. The School offers the undergraduate program at both Kelvin Grove and Caboolture campuses. It is a very active research school and has a number of joint appointments with health organisations. The school works collaboratively with many external stakeholders, locally, nationally and internationally.
The School is seeking an appointee to teach in the undergraduate nursing course and support the application of research to practice. The School is interested in applicants who have recognised experience in clinical nursing practice and an interest in innovative learning approaches.
DUTY STATEMENT
Position Purpose
The appointee will:
- contribute to teaching within the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses, especially in relation to clinical nursing practice;
- develop unit/course materials with appropriate advice and support of more senior academic staff;
- assist in the administration of the School’s academic programs which would include unit coordination for theoretical and clinical practice units;
- maintain and/or develop his/her scholarly and research activities relevant to clinical nursing.
Organisational Relationships
The appointee reports to the Head of School. The position will liaise with academic, research and administrative staff within the School, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and also staff at external health care facilities.
The appointee will be initially based at the Caboolture campus of QUT but may be required to teach at any other QUT Campus where nursing is taught or health care facilities where students are placed.
General standard
A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
- A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- Ensures staff and students work and study in an inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
- Eligibility to register as a registered nurse with the Queensland Nursing Council.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Ideally less than three years experience in an academic role.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
- Knowledge of equity and diversity principles which will enable the appointee to implement equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles at an everyday, operational level.
- Demonstrated expertise in an area of clinical nursing.
- Demonstrated ability to develop networks and to work in collaboration with members of external organisations.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
