INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
Appointment will be made at either Associate Lecturer or Lecturer level depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.
This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The program which is conducted over one year aims to provide participants with a comprehensive suite of skills, knowledge and abilities to ensure success in an academic career. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
QUT defines an Early Career Academic as a person who has been in an academic role for less than three years.
The School of Human Movement Studies at QUT is one of five schools within the Faculty of Health and is located at the Kelvin Grove campus, which is situated in easy reach of the heart of Brisbane. Further information on the School is available at http://www.hlth.qut.edu.au/hms/
The School is seeking to consolidate and strengthen its role as one of the leading educators of Health and Physical Education (HPE) practitioners and teachers by the addition of a suitably experienced person. The appointee should have a record of significant and highly regarded teaching experience in schools and/or at a tertiary institution. These areas will complement the strengths of existing staff. Applications are strongly encouraged from practitioners with expertise in several of the following areas: contemporary pedagogy of games skill development, outdoor recreation education, and the Years 1-10 curriculum development. Knowledge of Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) documentation and processes, while not essential, is highly desirable.
Position Purpose
Human Movement Studies plays an increasingly important role in contemporary society, as movement is fundamental to most aspects of daily activity. Today, the discipline is applied across a wide range of settings, that include physical activity and disability, sport, education, industry, the arts and rehabilitation, and is based on a strong knowledge base within a multidisciplinary framework.
The successful appointee will teach in (1) Game skills development and (2) Physical Education Curriculum units (including schools based community recreation/outdoor recreation) and be involved within various aspects of the School of Human Movement Studies activities.
Organisational Relationships
The appointee will report to the Head, School of Human Movement Studies for performance planning and review and workload management purposes. The incumbent will be required to liaise with professional, academic and research staff across the University and with external clients as necessary.
DUTY STATEMENT – ASSOCIATE LECTURER
General standard
An associate lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of an associate lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Limited administrative functions primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Development of subject area material with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator.
- Acting as unit coordinator provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.
- The most complex levels of unit coordination should not be carried out by an associate lecturer.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research and scholarship leading to outputs such as peer-reviewed publications and research grant applications.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Consultation with students.
- Marking and assessment primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
- An associate lecturer will not be required to teach primarily in units which are offered only at masters degree level or above.
Professional leadership
- Limited involvement in professional activity.
- An associate lecturer shall work with support and direction from academic staff classified at lecturer and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the academic gains in skill and experience.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- Ensures staff and students work and study in an inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
SELECTION CRITERIA - ASSOCIATE LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
To be appointed as an associate lecturer a candidate normally must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of four years tertiary study in Health and Physical Education, for example an honours degree, an extended professional degree or a three year degree with an associated postgraduate diploma. In considering the suitability of applicants the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and/or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Demonstrated experience in, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated potential for registration as a teacher in Queensland via the College of Teachers.
- A demonstrated ability and experience in teaching HPE, preferably with some undergraduate teaching experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in the pedagogy of physical skills development.
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Potential to participate in or conduct research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
- Commitment to the conduct of research in an area of health education consistent with the research interests of the School.
Other skills and attributes
- Ideally less than three years experience in an academic role.
- Knowledge of contemporary professional issues in HPE and the broader field of Human Movement Studies.
- Willingness to contribute to a team approach to teaching and research in HPE and within the multidisciplinary orientation of the School.
- Evidence of community service and engagement.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
- Knowledge of equity and diversity principles which will enable the appointee to implement equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles at an everyday, operational level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.

- The ability and willingness to promote HPE to relevant professional organisations and external groups.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated potential for registration as a teacher in Queensland via the College of Teachers.
- A demonstrated ability and experience in teaching HPE, preferably with some undergraduate teaching experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in the pedagogy of physical skills development.
