The Law Faculty is seeking to appoint two associate lecturers/lecturers in the Law School to contribute to the Faculty’s teaching and research programs. Strengths in the fields of torts, Australian constitutional law, administrative law, civil procedure, evidence, equity, trusts, environmental law, international law or legal research will be regarded highly.

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Appointment will be made at either Associate Lecturer or Lecturer level depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.

This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The program which is conducted over one year aims to provide participants with a comprehensive suite of skills, knowledge and abilities to ensure success in an academic career. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

QUT defines an Early Career Academic as a person who has been in an academic role for less than three years.

Position Purpose

The appointees will actively seek funding for, and make a contribution to, the research activities in the School (including cross-disciplinary research as appropriate). The appointee/s will also teach and coordinate at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and maintain a continuing involvement in at least one significant community service activity.

Organisational Relationships

The positions report to the Head, School of Law.

Faculty Structure

The QUT Faculty of Law was established in 1977 and comprises the Law School (one of the largest in the country), the School of Justice and the Legal Practice Unit. The Dean of the Law Faculty is Professor The Honourable Michael Lavarch a former Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Australia.

The Law School is located on the QUT Gardens Point (City) Campus and there are currently 52 full-time academic staff and 12 professional staff employed within the School as well as significant numbers of sessional staff.

Research

The Faculty has an established research centre with a limited number of designated areas of research strength which allow for collaboration across the faculties and University Institutes. The faculty is now placing greater emphasis on research potential and aligning members of staff with the Faculty’s identified research programs and areas of interest. Learning and Teaching

Law School staff teach into a range of courses including the Bachelor of Laws and nine associated double degrees, graduate certificates, graduate diploma, Masters, SJD and PhD. The Faculty of Law is a leader in legal education innovation, particularly in terms of its integration of technology in teaching and its skills development program especially the embedding of graduate capabilities in the core LLB curriculum. The Faculty has integrated learning environments that incorporate advanced teaching and learning tools such as streaming media, skills training materials, multi-choice quizzes for formative feedback on student progress, project management tools, reflective journals, student outlines of seminar topics (so that students can learn by example of their peers), on-line assessment tasks, discussion forums and chat-rooms.

Commercial Activities

The Faculty prides itself on its ability to and reputation for providing high quality consulting and educational expertise to the professions and broader industry. The Faculty also holds a firm commitment to ensuring its research and knowledge is shared with the broader community.

We have undertaken a significant number of educational and research consultancies for industry and government. Many of our Faculty members have real world engagement advising with law firms or holding positions with Committees of the Law Society and Law Council of Australia. As well, the Faculty has two Professorships in Law sponsored by major law firms: the Clayton Utz Chair in Public Law and the Gadens Chair in Property Law.

DUTY STATEMENT – ASSOCIATE LECTURER

General standard

An associate lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.

Specific duties of an associate lecturer may include:

SELECTION CRITERIA – ASSOCIATE LECTURER

Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

To be appointed as an associate lecturer a candidate normally must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

Qualifications

Completion of four years tertiary study in the relevant discipline, for example an honours degree, an extended professional degree or a three year degree with an associated postgraduate diploma. In considering the suitability of applicants the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and/or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.

An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
