We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced lecturer to teach electrical engineering with a focus on power engineering with particular interest in either high voltage equipment or power systems dynamics. The successful applicant will be expected to teach students enrolled in the Faculty’s teaching programs and work closely with industry partners on external courses. The School
The School of Engineering Systems has approximately 56 full time academic staff and nearly 70 research and support staff. The School contributes to teaching, research and consultancy in a multitude of engineering discipline areas, including: aerospace/avionics, computer systems, electrical, infomechatronics, mechanical, medical, power systems, software, telecommunications and engineering management. This engagement is concentrated around four areas of academic focus: smart systems, energy and power infrastructure, health and biomedical engineering, and engineering asset management. In addition to its flagship courses, the School also offers three double degrees.
The School’s industry and research focus has a practical purpose and strong linkages have been developed with industry in the domestic and internal environment, including the sponsorship of several professorial positions. Corporate partners include Boeing Australia, Ergon, Energex, Powerlink, Queensland Health, Brisbane Airport Corporation and Power Engineering Alliance (PEA). There are currently 165 research students undertaking research Masters or PhDs.
All appointees are expected to have grounding in one or more of the professional disciplines. Ability to contribute in one of the Faculty’s areas of emphasis will be well regarded.
DUTY STATEMENT
Position Purpose
A Lecturer is expected to
- teach;
- have commenced development of a research profile;
- carry out activities to maintain and develop relevant scholarly, research, application and/or professional expertise; and
- collaborate and participate in a significant way to team work associated with faculty activities.
Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Head of School, and will liaise with academic and professional staff, and with students of the Faculty on a daily basis. The position is located within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Gardens Point campus.
General standard
A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research application and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. A lecturer will be expected to collaborate and participate in a significant manner in teamwork associated with the faculty activities.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
- A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research including undertaking research activities and/or participating in collaborative research activities in areas that relate to the Faculty’s academic focus.
- Critically reflect on activities such as teaching and consultancy with the aim of developing research capacity through publications or conference presentations.
- Publication of research outcomes in appropriate journals.
- Preparation, in collaboration with more senior staff, of applications for research funding.
- Active participation in research mentoring and collaborative research teams.
- Participate in University and Faculty based activities designed to increase research capabilities.
- Undertake associate postgraduate supervision as required in the area of expertise.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
Professional leadership
- Involvement in professional activity.
External relations
- Be part of collaborative teams running short courses, commercial research projects or similar.
Health and safety
- Responsible for the health and safety of students, tutors, practical demonstrators and visitors under their control.
- Required to observe all safety procedures and protocols within their operating environment.
- Expected to willingly cooperate in the objectives of making the Faculty a safe and healthy workplace.
- Required to report any hazard or unsafe condition which they observe.

- Ensures staff and students work and study in an inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Appointees must demonstrate an ability, or the potential, to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
- In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard is had to teaching experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or technical achievement.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to participation in career development activities that are agreed with the supervisor through QUT’s performance planning and review process.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
- Ability or demonstrated potential to participate in research in at least one of the areas of academic focus of the faculty.
External relations
- Demonstrated potential/experience in offering short courses or engaging in other partnering activities for instance participating in recruitment and relationship-building with external partners.
Health and safety
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
Equity and diversity
- Knowledge of equity and diversity principles which will enable the appointee to implement equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles at an everyday, operational level.
Other skills and attributes
- Ideally less than three years experience in an academic role.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
