We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced lecturer to teach electrical engineering with a focus on power engineering with particular interest in either high voltage equipment or power systems dynamics. The successful applicant will be expected to teach students enrolled in the Faculty’s teaching programs and work closely with industry partners on external courses. Opportunities exist for the appointee to join one of the Faculty’s research programs. Women, Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The program which is conducted over one year aims to provide participants with a comprehensive suite of skills, knowledge and abilities to ensure success in an academic career. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

QUT defines an Early Career Academic as a person who has been in an academic role for less than three years.

The Faculty

The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering aspires to make a positive difference to people’s lives by engineering, designing and developing a better world. We aspire to be world class in selected areas of research focus, based around exemplary partnerships, leading to outstanding teaching and learning outcomes and environments.

Our core disciplines are in Engineering, Design and Development. The Faculty is an international leader in Built Environment and Engineering, active in six Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) in Integrated Engineering Asset Management, Construction Innovation, Interaction Design, Railway Technologies, Satellite Systems and Automotive Technologies. QUT is also one of four university partners collaborating with Shell as part of its Project Academy which develops and delivers world-class learning events in project engineering and management to Shell staff globally.

The School

The School of Engineering Systems has approximately 56 full time academic staff and nearly 70 research and support staff. The School contributes to teaching, research and consultancy in a multitude of engineering discipline areas, including: aerospace/avionics, computer systems, electrical, infomechatronics, mechanical, medical, power systems, software, telecommunications and engineering management. This engagement is concentrated around four areas of academic focus: smart systems, energy and power infrastructure, health and biomedical engineering, and engineering asset management. In addition to its flagship courses, the School also offers three double degrees.

The School’s industry and research focus has a practical purpose and strong linkages have been developed with industry in the domestic and internal environment, including the sponsorship of several professorial positions. Corporate partners include Boeing Australia, Ergon, Energex, Powerlink, Queensland Health, Brisbane Airport Corporation and Power Engineering Alliance (PEA). There are currently 165 research students undertaking research Masters or PhDs.

All appointees are expected to have grounding in one or more of the professional disciplines. Ability to contribute in one of the Faculty’s areas of emphasis will be well regarded.

DUTY STATEMENT

Position Purpose

A Lecturer is expected to

Organisational Relationships

The position reports to the Head of School, and will liaise with academic and professional staff, and with students of the Faculty on a daily basis. The position is located within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Gardens Point campus.

General standard

A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research application and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. A lecturer will be expected to collaborate and participate in a significant manner in teamwork associated with the faculty activities.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Appointees must demonstrate an ability, or the potential, to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.

Subject to the preceeding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:

An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.

Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
