INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
Appointment will be made at either Associate Lecturer or Lecturer level depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants should nominate the level for which they are applying and address the selection criteria for the nominated level.
This position is part of the Early Career Academic Development Program at QUT. The appointees will participate in an extensive development program specifically designed for this cohort. The program which is conducted over one year aims to provide participants with a comprehensive suite of skills, knowledge and abilities to ensure success in an academic career. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
QUT defines an Early Career Academic as a person who has been in an academic role for less than three years.
The School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations within the Faculty of Business at QUT has a distinguished record of achievement in research, teaching and community service within its disciplines. The School provides undergraduate and postgraduate coursework, research and executive education programs, research and consultation services and a diversity of activities within the community.
DUTY STATEMENT – ASSOCIATE LECTURER
Position Purpose
The position will contribute to the development and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in International Business with a focus in logistics and/or trade. The position includes responsibility for related academic activities including teaching, scholarly research, participation in industry partnerships and School committees.
Organisational Relationships
The appointee will report to the Head of School, Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations for PPr-AS (Performance Planning and Review for Academic Staff), academic leadership and guidance. The appointee will interact with other members of the School as well as liaise with staff from faculties across the University where appropriate.
General standard
An associate lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of an associate lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Limited administrative functions primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Development of subject area material with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator.
- Acting as unit coordinator provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees.
- The most complex levels of unit coordination should not be carried out by an associate lecturer.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
- Consultation with students.
- Marking and assessment primarily connected with units in which the academic teaches.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
- An associate lecturer will not be required to teach primarily in units which are offered only at masters degree level or above.
Professional leadership
- Limited involvement in professional activity.
- An associate lecturer shall work with support and direction from academic staff classified at lecturer and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the academic gains in skill and experience.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- Ensures staff and students work and study in an inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
SELECTION CRITERIA - ASSOCIATE LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
To be appointed as an associate lecturer a candidate normally must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of four years tertiary study in the relevant discipline, for example an honours degree, an extended professional degree or a three year degree with an associated postgraduate diploma. In considering the suitability of applicants the selection panel shall have regard both to the level of qualifications and/or experience relevant for the appropriate discipline area and equivalent forms of accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- evidence of demonstrated ability to undertake the following to university standard:
- prepare and present materials for undergraduate and graduate diploma level tutorials and other small group teaching including assessment
- develop materials for lectures (including On-line teaching) which are presented as part of a unit or subject area with appropriate guidance from the unit, subject area or course coordinator;
- supervise and mentor students working on assessment projects
- evidence of regular participation in administrative functions within a university or other organisation.
- evidence of regular participation in the affairs of relevant professional bodies and community groups and/or in professional practice and/or in development of continuing education programs for the profession;
- demonstrated commitment to participation in a program of activities designed to develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Potential to participate in or conduct research/scholarship.
Other skills and attributes
- Ideally less than three years experience in an academic role.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
- Knowledge of equity and diversity principles which will enable the appointee to implement equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles at an everyday, operational level.

- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Ideally less than three years experience in an academic role.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
- Knowledge of equity and diversity principles which will enable the appointee to implement equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles at an everyday, operational level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a masters or doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.
