The position involves specialist teaching and research within the domain of investigative psychology and/or criminal profiling as well as a cross-disciplinary focus on Knowledge Management with regard to policing and security.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Position Purpose
The appointee will make a significant contribution to the research activities in the School (including cross-disciplinary research as appropriate). The appointee will also teach and coordinate at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and maintain a continuing involvement in at least one significant community service activity.
Organisational Relationships
The positions report to the Head, School of Justice.
Faculty Structure
The QUT Faculty of Law was established in 1977 and comprises the Law School (one of the largest in the country), the School of Justice and the Legal Practice Unit. The Executive Dean of the Law Faculty is Professor The Honourable Michael Lavarch a former Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Australia.
The School of Justice is located at the Gardens Point Campus. There are currently 12 full time academic staff and 4 professional staff employed within the School as well as significant numbers of sessional staff. The school web page is available at http://www.law.qut.edu.au/about/justice.jsp
Research
The Faculty has a research centre with a limited number of designated areas of research strength which allow for collaboration across the faculties and University Institutes. The Faculty is now placing greater emphasis on research potential and ensuring that new members of staff have research areas of interest that coincide with the Faculty’s identified research programs and areas of interest.
Learning and Teaching

The Faculty of Law is a leader in legal education innovation, particularly in terms of its integration of technology in teaching and its skills development program. The Faculty has integrated learning environments that incorporate advanced teaching and learning tools such as streaming media, skills training materials, multi-choice quizzes for formative feedback on student progress, project management tools, reflective journals, student outlines of seminar topics (so that students can learn by example of their peers), on-line assessment tasks, discussion forums and chat-rooms.
DUTY STATEMENT - LECTURER
General standard
A lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
Specific duties
Specific duties of a lecturer may include:
Academic leadership
- Initiation and development of unit material.
- Acting as unit or subject area coordinator.
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior academic staff.
- A range of administrative functions, the majority of which are connected with the units or subject areas in which the academic teaches.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a number of committees.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
- Teaching performance and leadership
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.
- Specific duties relating to this position
- Attendance at and participation in school research workshops and seminars.
- Develop a research profile and seek research funding opportunities in areas that align with the Faculty research programs and areas of interest.
- Coordination of and teaching into undergraduate and postgraduate units.
- Contribute to course improvement initiatives and ongoing curriculum development and teaching innovation projects.
- Contribute to the postgraduate coursework programs in association with a senior member of staff.
- Ongoing development and maintenance of online learning and teaching materials.
- Participation in student-related activities and promotional events.
SELECTION CRITERIA - LECTURER
Appointees must demonstrate an ability to undertake the duties prescribed for the position and must possess the necessary skills required for the position.
Subject to the preceding paragraph, to be appointed as a lecturer a candidate must meet the following selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection panel and the authorising officer:
Qualifications
- Completion of a doctoral or masters qualification in the relevant disciplinary area or equivalent accreditation or standing.
Academic and Professional Leadership
- Record of, or capacity to, contribute to administration in a University or professional setting and to interact within these settings.
- Public or professional standing or recognition in the relevant area of law;
- An active role in the field through professional associations or professional education or commercial and/or government consultancy.
Teaching and Learning
- Demonstrated experience in, or potential for, effective teaching including ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and ability to supervise postgraduate students. Applicants from a non-academic background should address this criterion by quoting equivalent experience such as delivery of seminars, conference papers and/or training courses.
Research and Scholarship
- Demonstrated potential/experience in research/scholarship which may be evidenced by publications and/or success in attracting research support.
Other skills and attributes
- Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with other staff to develop and deliver teaching materials, including on-line learning and teaching materials.
- Excellent oral communication skills for the delivery of an appropriate teaching and learning environment for students.
- Interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to develop networks and partnerships across disciplines and with members of external organisations.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles which will enable the appointee to implement these principles at an appropriate level.
An applicant who does not meet one or more of the selection criteria, but who is considered by the selection panel to have the potential to do so within the period of normal probation (three years), or term of appointment may be appointed with the panel recommending participation in staff development during the probation period. In such cases the letter of offer of appointment shall state specific matters to which the staff development is to be directed.
Equivalent standing can be demonstrated by comparison of attainment in areas relevant to academic employment with the standard attained in a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline area.

Specific duties of a senior lecturer may include:

- Broad administrative functions.
- Attendance at school and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning or committee work.
- Providing advice and support to more junior academic staff.
Research and scholarship
- The conduct of research.
- Teaching performance and leadership
- Exercising a significant role in teaching and teaching development within the University.
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of honours students and of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
- Development and promotion of innovative teaching methods.
- Production of teaching materials for students for whom the academic has responsibility.
Professional leadership
- Substantial involvement in professional activity.
Other
- Accountable for effective supervision including on-the-job safety training, the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures and the conduct of safe work practices.

- Evidence of demonstrated ability to undertake teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate units including contribution to teaching and development of postgraduate programs.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate students.
- Demonstrated experience in the delivery of lectures to large groups of students.
- Demonstrated experience in on-line learning and teaching methods.
Research and Scholarship
- A record of independent and collaborative publications (eg articles in refereed journals, professional journals, books, presentations which indicate a contribution to the area of expertise).
