Introduction
There needs to be a written risk assessment on the need for first aid training signed by the manager of the relevant area. This covers the hazards of the workplace, the proximity of medical help, the history of injuries etc. The government advisory standard for First Aid is available on the web.
If training is seen as necessary or desirable given the nature of the work etc. then those new to training should undertake a face-to-face course with accreditation for three years. At twelve and 24 months a CPR refresher should be completed. Before the First Aid Certificate expires at three years, a one day recertification course should be completed.
First Aid information / seminar notices will occasionally be posted through Health and Safety Committees.
We require that the first aid records be forwarded to Health & Safety Advisory Services at the end of the calendar year or when the page is full. Health and Safety Advisory Services is located at 126 Margaret Street, Level 6, Brisbane.
In the final analysis, the provision of first aid is a management issue, as is injury prevention.
