Program description
This training session is specifically for staff who are involved with relocation, and is generally one hour in duration.
It focuses on structures of the back that can cause pain and injury. The session illustrates and demonstrates techniques to lift, push, pull and carry objects, thus providing staff with information to perform the tasks invloved in the move safely. It also describes the risks associated with back injuries and possible solutions, which can be implemented to minimise the risks. It has a practical component where participants are encouraged to attend.
A kit has been developed which can be used to provide staff with valuable information for the relocation. The kit can be adapted and changed to suit the Division/Faculty, which is involved in the relocation process.
The training session titled ‘Manual Handling for the Move' differs somewhat from the general Back Care/Manual Handling sessions, which are scheduled throughout the year.
Who should attend?
Workplace Health and Safety Officers and Workplace Health and Safety Representatives who can share the information with others. Supervisors who need the skill to analyse and set the safe method of work should also attend, plus other nominated staff. Staff should be requested to attend, and then in turn, be willing and able to advise others on manual handling issues for the work areas they represent.
